Library Media Center Philosophy

The state, district, and Holmes Elementary School recognize that the library media program is a critical component of every school’s total education program. Our program is flexibly scheduled so that students and teachers can have access when they need it, not just on a certain day and time of the week.

Through the instructional activities, resources, facilities, and technologies provided, students and staff become effective and efficient users and creators of ideas and information.

In collaboration with teachers, the teacher librarian instructs literacy throughout the content areas, enhances learning opportunities, through technology, builds reading literacy, designs and delivers instruction, and provides intellectual and physical access to an organized system of ideas, information, and resources.

Encourage Your Child to Be a Life Long Library User

Some things you can do to encourage your children in the use of the library:

  • Ask them what books they have checked out
  • Remind them to return books on time
  • Use standard resources available online and in print: Research Basics; Research Basics, Jr; and Writing Basics
  • Monitor Internet usage
  • Go to the public library
  • Demonstrate research and let them help plan a trip to the movies, to downtown, or the family vacation
  • Volunteer in the school library media center
  • Set an example by reading
